Mother's Day is a special occasion to honour and celebrate the incredible women in our lives who have nurtured, supported, and loved us unconditionally. While flowers, cards, and gifts are lovely gestures, there's another meaningful way to express gratitude to the mums in our lives: through yoga. Yoga not only strengthens the body and calms the mind but also provides a beautiful opportunity to cultivate gratitude and appreciation. In this blog post, we'll explore a Mother's Day gratitude flow—a sequence of yoga poses designed to help you connect with feelings of thanks and appreciation for the maternal figures in your life. We also dive deeper into the topic of gratitude and the importance it plays in our life.

What is gratitude?

Gratitude is an important part of our life, a way to give thanks to the people around us that means a lot and to everything we are grateful for in our lives. In our busy days running around getting frustrated and stressed out, gratitude is a great way to ground yourself back into what is really important in your life. We often focus on the small things for example someone at work made us angry or a negative comment someone said. In the big picture these can be hard at the time but when using gratitude in our daily practice these things will not carry so much weight as we know what is truly important to us.

Being a mum myself and having a chronic ill husband, I have found that practicing gratitude has been very important in my life. It has been numerous of ups and downs with many challenges, but I couldn’t have done it without the support of my friends and family. Living overseas far away from immediate family my friends have been a great support network in tough times and for this I’m very grateful. I know they are there when I need them, and this is very reassuring. I’m also very grateful for being a mum as the road to this wasn’t easy. We often take things for granted until we hit the wall of reality, and we are faced with another challenge. By incorporating yoga and meditation in my daily routine it has really helped me to stay grounded and have faith in the things that are important to me and that I’m grateful for.

Gratitude in yoga and meditation is the practice of cultivating a deep sense of appreciation and thankfulness for the present moment, as well as for the blessings and experiences in one's life. It involves consciously directing one's attention towards the positive aspects of life, acknowledging the abundance and goodness that surrounds us, and expressing gratitude for both the big and small things.

The importance of gratitude

Gratitude holds great importance for mums as it can profoundly impact their well-being, their relationships with their children, and their overall experience of motherhood. Here are some key reasons why gratitude is crucial for mums:

  • Shifts Focus to the Positive: Motherhood often comes with numerous challenges, stressors, and moments of overwhelm. Practicing gratitude allows mums to shift their focus from what's going wrong to what's going right. By intentionally noticing and appreciating the positive aspects of their lives, mums can cultivate a more optimistic outlook, even during difficult times.

  • ·Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Research has shown that gratitude practices can reduce stress and anxiety levels. For mums juggling multiple responsibilities, feeling stressed and overwhelmed is very common. By practicing gratitude, mums can activate the body's relaxation response, leading to decreased levels of stress hormones and a greater sense of calm and well-being.

  • Strengthens Relationships: Expressing gratitude fosters deeper connections and stronger relationships. When mums’ express gratitude towards their children, partners, or other family members, it communicates love, appreciation, and acknowledgment of their contributions. This, in turn, strengthens bonds and nurtures a supportive and loving family environment.

  • Increases Resilience: Practicing gratitude can help mums build resilience and navigate the inevitable ups and downs with greater ease. By focusing on the positive aspects of their lives, mums can cultivate a sense of perspective, adaptability, and inner strength to weather life's storms.

How you can practice gratitude

There are several different ways you can incorporate gratitude into your daily routine. Here are some things you can try.

Gratitude Meditation: Gratitude meditation involves focusing the mind on feelings of gratitude and appreciation. Practitioners may sit quietly and reflect on specific things they are grateful for, such as relationships, experiences, opportunities, or even simple joys like the warmth of the sun or the beauty of nature. By actively cultivating feelings of gratitude, practitioners can shift their perspective from scarcity to abundance, fostering a greater sense of contentment and well-being.

Gratitude Journaling: Keeping a gratitude journal is a common practice in both yoga and meditation. Each day, practitioners write down a few things they are grateful for, whether it's something that happened that day or a broader aspect of their life. This practice helps individuals become more attuned to the positive aspects of their lives and reinforces feelings of appreciation over time.

Gratitude Mantras: Mantras are sacred sounds or phrases repeated during meditation to focus the mind and cultivate specific qualities or intentions. Gratitude mantras, such as "I am grateful for all that I have" or "I appreciate the abundance in my life," can help anchor the mind in feelings of thankfulness and abundance during meditation practice.

Yoga Poses: Certain yoga poses can also help cultivate feelings of gratitude by opening the heart and creating space for appreciation. Heart-opening poses like Camel Pose (Ustrasana), Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana), and Fish Pose (Matsyasana) can help practitioners connect with feelings of love, compassion, and gratitude.

Service and Giving Back: Practicing gratitude in yoga and meditation is not just about acknowledging what we have but also about giving back to others. Engaging in acts of service, kindness, and generosity can deepen our sense of gratitude by recognizing the interconnectedness of all beings and the opportunity to make a positive impact in the world.

Mother's Day is a time to express thanks and appreciation to the maternal figures who have shaped and enriched our lives. Through the practice of yoga, we can cultivate gratitude, love, and connection, honouring the incredible women who have nurtured us along life's journey. Whether you practice this Mother's Day gratitude alone or with the special mums in your life, may it serve as a heartfelt tribute to their unwavering love and support. Happy Mother's Day!
