Nurturing Your Mind, Body, and Soul: A Journey of Self-Discovery through Yoga

The word yoga to me means so much as it has provided me with peace, calm and a sense of presence in a very busy life. Yoga has been my saving grace in life’s ups and downs and is now an integrated part of my life and the way I live. Although this wasn’t the case over 20 years ago when I had been sick, often felt tired, had pain and felt stressed. My body and mind weren’t coping and everything was out of balance. This was the turning point in my life and when I discovered yoga which was a lifechanging experience and the start of my yoga journey.

The word Yoga is often referred to as ‘union’ between the body, mind and spirit. Compared to any other exercise yoga encompasses physical fitness, mental well-being and emotional balance. As a busy mum and professional, we are often time-poor, but we want to have a good workout, feel amazing and energised. To achieve these goals, it’s important that we have a balance between the body, mind and spirit and if this is not happening, we immediately feel a negative impact. When I’ve had a stressful time and not have had enough time to re-charge, my body feels sluggish, tired and I have no energy. This is why I listen to my body to see what I need to feel in balance. Yoga is an excellent way to help you keep this balance.

Some key benefits of yoga for busy mums includes.

  • Stress relief - Yoga incorporates various relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing and meditation, which can help mums reduce stress levels, calm the mind, and promote a sense of inner peace. It provides a dedicated time for self-care and rejuvenation.

  • Increase energy and vitality - The physical aspect of yoga, including the asanas (postures) and gentle movements, can help boost energy levels and alleviate fatigue. Regular yoga practice enhances circulation, improves flexibility, and releases tension, leaving mums feeling more energized and revitalized.

  • Improving physical well-being - Yoga offers a range of physical benefits, such as improved strength, flexibility, and posture. Busy mums often engage in various physical activities, and yoga can complement those activities by enhancing overall fitness, reducing the risk of injury, and relieving muscular tension and stiffness.

  • Mental clarity and focus -The mindfulness and concentration cultivated during yoga practice can help moms improve their mental clarity, focus, and decision-making abilities. It enables you to better manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and stay present in the moment.

  • Emotional balance and self-care - Motherhood can be emotionally demanding, and yoga provides a space for mums to reconnect with themselves, process emotions, and find emotional balance. It encourages self-care, self-compassion, and self-awareness, helping mums navigate the challenges of motherhood with greater resilience and emotional well-being.

  • Better sleep - Yoga can assist mums in achieving more restful and rejuvenating sleep. The relaxation techniques and mindful practices of yoga promote deep relaxation, reduce anxiety, and facilitate a peaceful state of mind, leading to improved sleep quality and duration.

  • Community and support - Yoga can be a powerful tool for fostering community support and connection where you can meet other like- minded mums. Being part of a community where you can share your challenges and wins is very important but also cultivates mental and emotional well-being, which can help build stronger bonds among individuals.

We often tend to overlook the mental health and the balanced lifestyle but, in our society, mums have an increased pressure to perform do well at work, look after the kids and look great. Carving out time and looking after yourself doesn’t only benefit yourself but will also have a flow on effect on how you show up around family, friends and colleagues. You don’t have to do any long yoga sessions to reap the benefits, short consistent training can still bring noticeable differences in your life.

Yoga for me has been a journey of self-discovery that has provided me with a way to exercise which has improved my strength and flexibility but also given me quiet time for my mind in a very hectic and stressful life. At the start of my yoga journey, I would never take time to just sit down or take it easy, I was always on the go and thought you had to be moving all the time and accomplish things. The fact is that I wasn’t very productive at all because I was exhausted, I pushed myself too much. I soon realised you can’t sustain this in the long run, and you need to recharge your body to be able to have the energy and thrive.
