Rising strong: How Yoga can help mums cultivate resilience

Life as a busy mum could mean chaos, challenges, tears, struggles and all of this can have an affect our wellbeing including our mental and emotional strength. Sometimes it can just feel hard and painful, and you might feel that nothing works no matter what you try.

I know how you feel. As a mum myself and with a husband that has a chronic illness, there are many challenges and struggles in everyday life and it can be very hard to plan. This is something that can really affect your own health if you don’t look after yourself and nurture your wellbeing. If you learn how to cultivate resilience you can better bounce back with strength from these situations. I’ve found that practicing yoga regularly can help you build physical, mental, and emotional strength, enabling you to better navigate life's ups and downs. Yoga offers busy moms a toolkit for not just surviving but thriving amidst the demands of daily life. It has been a saving grace for me numerous times in life and I want to show you the many benefits it has and how it can help you in your journey of motherhood.

Here are some key benefits of yoga for building resilience which you can incorporate into your daily routine.

  • The Yoga-Mind Connection:

Yoga is not only about physical postures; it's also a journey within. Through mindfulness and breathwork, moms can develop self-awareness and emotional regulation. As you step onto your mat, consider it a sacred space to tune into your thoughts and feelings without judgment. By fostering this connection between the mind and body, you can better navigate the challenges that come your way.

  • Stress Management and Calm:

The hustle and bustle of motherhood can lead to stress and burnout. Yoga provides an oasis of calm. Through gentle flows, restorative poses, and deep breathing exercises, you can activate the body's relaxation response. Regular practice helps you manage stress, keeping you balanced and grounded, no matter how chaotic life gets.

  • Physical Strength and Vitality:

Moms are superheroes, but even superheroes need strength and vitality. Yoga postures build physical resilience, enhancing your core strength, flexibility, and overall fitness. As you flow through poses like Warrior II and Tree Pose, you're not just toning your muscles - you're also building mental strength and determination.

  • Mindset Shift: From Surviving to Thriving:

Yoga philosophy teaches us about impermanence and letting go. Applying these concepts, you can shift your mindset from merely surviving the chaos to thriving within it. With each breath, acknowledge that challenges are fleeting, and your ability to rise above them is unwavering.

Breathing and meditation practice

Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. Practice deep, slow breaths, inhaling for a count of 4, holding for 4, and exhaling for 6. After a few minutes, shift your focus to a positive affirmation or mantra, repeating it silently. This practice helps calm the mind and increase resilience.

Remember, even short yoga practices can have a significant impact on your well-being. As a busy mom, the key is to integrate these practices into your daily routine in a way that feels manageable and supportive. It's not about perfection but about nurturing your own well-being alongside your responsibilities.  Additionally, listening to your body, respecting your limits, and avoiding pushing yourself too hard are essential aspects of a balanced yoga practice. If you're new to yoga or have any health concerns, consider consulting a healthcare professional before starting a new routine.

To all the incredible moms out there, remember that your well-being matters. Through the practice of yoga, you have the opportunity to rise strong and build resilience, not just for yourself, but for the entire family. Embrace the mat as your sanctuary, a place where you can cultivate inner strength, find moments of peace, and emerge as the empowered, resilient mom you were meant to be.
